We love naturally derived mineral sunscreens for their many benefits. However, there are two key things you need to be aware of before application. Read this article to find out what they are and get our guide on how to easily and effortlessly apply mineral sunscreens, so you can enjoy the sun with peace of mind.

Karmameju's approach to holistic skincare makes mineral sun filters, also known as physical sun filters, the only right choice of UV protection in the SUN range. Mineral sun filters consist of naturally derived minerals extracted from soil, which melt and settle on top of the skin like a shield that protects against UV rays by reflecting them away from the skin.

The benefits of natural mineral sunscreens, also known as physical UV filters, are numerous: they are gentle and do not penetrate the skin, making them less likely to cause irritation such as sun rash. However, the downside of mineral sunscreens is that they can feel sticky on the skin, leave a white/blue cast, and be difficult to spread evenly.

Therefore, there are two key things you need to be aware of before application...

Your Guide to Mineral Sunscreens

1. Melting the mineral pigments on your skin: To make the mineral pigments transparent, they need to "melt" into your skin with good rubbing from warm hands. Warm the sunscreen between your palms before applying it to your body or face. We recommend applying the sunscreen in two layers to ensure the product is well-worked and covers your entire body.

2. Dry skin and mineral pigments are not friends: If you have dry skin, the "greyish" tint will be noticeable. Therefore, well-moisturized and exfoliated skin is highly beneficial when using mineral-based sunscreen. With well-prepped skin, Karmameju SUN will melt into your skin, leaving it protected, nourished and with a beautiful glow—without feeling greasy.

Dry brushing removes dry skin, making it an ideal skincare ritual to prioritize during sunscreen season, but also all year round. Exfoliating with a body scrub is another excellent skin preparation method. You can achieve thoroughly moisturized skin with body lotion, body oil, or our PRE- & AFTER SUN, which also double-boosts your skin with essential antioxidants before sun exposure.

Extra Tip: Remember smart sun habits

Use the UV index and your common sense when applying sunscreen to yourself and the kids. Ideally, sunscreen should be applied every 2 hours if you're in direct sunlight, or more often if you swim, towel dry, or sweat heavily. We also recommend taking a siesta: take a break from the sun and enjoy a refreshing smoothie when the sun is at its peak between 12 and 3 PM.

Mineral Sunscreens - as nature intended

Karmameju SUN is created uncompromisingly with nature's ingredients, without silicone and chemical filters, so it takes a few extra minutes to apply. Karmameju SUN can be applied smoothly, ensuring you don’t look like a white/grey/blue ghost. It takes a couple of minutes longer compared to sunscreens based on chemical UV filters or nano UV filters. We gladly spend these extra minutes to reap the many benefits of mineral sunscreens - and remember, touching your skin releases happiness hormones in the brain, making it well worth the effort.

With the right technique, applying mineral sunscreens is effortless.

Enjoy the sun and happy applying!
