THOUGHTS FROM METTE

At Karmameju, we want the benefits of Karmameju Bioactive Skincare to be accessible to all, with or without perfume. In this article, founder Mette Skjærbæk shares her thoughts on the journey from scepticism to success in developing an uncompromising perfume-free series with the same high integrity and sensory experience sensuality as our aromatherapy series.

About the perfume-free series

I want the benefits of Karmameju Bioactive Skincare to be accessible to all – whether they prefer skincare with nature’s aromatherapeutic scents or perfume-free formulas.

Some love to use body care with fragrance, but face care without. Others, the opposite.
Some want only one or the other. Some prefer only natural scents, others synthetic fragrance. And some have specific skin conditions or recommendations from a dermatologist or facialist. Over the many years I’ve worked with skincare, I’ve encountered all kinds of preferences – and we want to meet them all.

Using scented or unscented skincare is a personal choice. That’s why it has been so important for me to develop a complete PERFUME-FREE series of face and bodycare – as a complement to our three scented aromatherapeutic series: LOVING, CALMING and ENERGIZING.

What is “perfume”?

Any ingredient added to a skincare product to alter its scent is defined as perfume – whether natural or synthetic, both fall under the same category.

At Karmameju, we only use natural, aromatherapeutic fragrances in our skincare – and not just for the sake of scent. They also offer proven skin-enhancing and health-promoting benefits*.

I have deep trust in nature and feel grateful for the daily “connection” to it through my skincare. I love aromatherapeutic skincare – both for the sensory experience and the skin and body benefits. I’ve used it since I was young, and it brings such positive well-being into my life

Nature's pure, subtle plant scents

Perfume-free, but not scent-free

With the decision to create a perfume-free range, I was – admittedly – a little concerned. Not about the efficacy, as I knew we could formulate powerful products using nature’s ingredients. But about whether they could be as sense-awakening. But also as the skincare industry often uses fragrance to mask the kind of “odd” fragrance that can occur when combining various raw ingredients. Especially natural ingredients as oils, plant butters etc. can, when combined, end up smelling a little... well, odd, in lack of a better word.

I knew we could create equally effective products – nature offers so many possibilities when it comes to ingredients – but the sensory stimulation and the often-mentioned “slightly odd” scent… that concerned me a bit more.

My concern was unnecessary, as we succeeded in formulating products that smell lovely, products that smell of the ingredients they are made of: fresh aloe vera gel, olive extract, shea butter, etc. These delicate, natural scents have a charm of their own. Today, I reach for our perfume-free EMBRACE body butter just as often as the  aromatherapeutic JOY body butter, with its heavenly scent that evokes memories of the Southern sun and summer. With the decision to create a perfume-free range, I was – admittedly – a little concerned

Aromatherapy or perfume-free?

These days, I use a combination of Karmameju products with and without perfume – partly because I enjoy both, and partly because I test every single production batch at home myself. Just like cooking with natural ingredients, no two batches are ever identical. That is why I test all products to ensure our high quality on my own skin.

In that way, I also use all our perfume-free products, many of which have become personal favourites.

The choice is entirely individual. I’m so glad we can have products that can be mixed and matched to create a personalised face and body ritual – tailored to every skin type, at every age.

Always write us at info@karmameju.com if you’d like help building your perfect skincare routine.

Skincare rooted in nature and human connection

We believe in the human connection to nature. That’s why our skincare is based on natural, bioactive and organic formulations – created with biotechnology, plant oils, plant extracts, essential oils and clinically documented ingredients.

Now I’m just curious – what do you prefer? With or without fragrance?

Warmest regards,
Mette
