Furoshiki is the traditional Japanese cloth-wrapping technique used for gifting. Dating back as early as the 8th century, furoshiki was originally used by noble families to wrap their clothing when visiting public baths and hot springs – to avoid their belongings being mistaken for someone else’s. Beyond its practicality, furoshiki also holds symbolic meaning: in Japan, wrapping a gift in cloth is seen as a gesture of care, respect and affection for the recipient.
