Ever wonder why you experience greasy hair, why your hair breaks or are you just in general need of tips and tricks to get healthy, lustrous hair?

Good haircare is seldomly straightforward. Here, we have our best tips and tricks for hair and scalp.

1. When washing your hair, the scalp is actually the most important part of your head to wash. In fact, we should rename hair washing as scalp washing. Make sure your scalp is the focus of your hair washing. Massage it and ideally give it a gentle scratch with your nails or with our scalp brush. The scalp is where dead skin cells, the skin’s natural oils, styling products, pollutants and dirt accumulate. This is not good for the small hair follicles, which should ideally have a healthy environment with plenty of room to grow new hair. Clogged hair follicles will result in thinner, more fragile hairs, ingrown hairs and small, red bumps on the scalp.

ACTIVATE scalp brush is an extra helping hand in the shower. It effectively removes build-up around the hair follicles, clearing the path for undisturbed, oxygenated hair follicles and strengthened hair strands, while the massaging movements relieve muscle tension and headaches.

2. Don’t wash your hair too often. The more frequently you wash your hair, the more oil the scalp will produce in an attempt to make up for the drying effect caused by shampoo and hair washing. This can become a vicious cycle and give you an oily scalp. Use PUFF dry shampoo on days where you skip the hair wash. A natural and perfume-free dry shampoo, with silky powder mix from Tapioca, Kaolin Clay, Corn Powder and Vitamin E which lightly wraps around the hair strand to absorb excess grease from hair and hair scalp.

3. Wash your hair in lukewarm water. Water of around 40 degrees is said to be the ideal temperature to wash your hair. Don’t scald your hair and scalp with water that is too hot as it seriously dries out your hair, making it brittle and dull. SWISH shampoo is a gentle, naturally foaming, sulfate-free shampoo with calming, antibacterial properties from dynamic plant extracts.

4. Be sure to rinse your hair – and especially your scalp – thoroughly after each wash. Rinse in sections to ensure that all the hair product is out. Shampoo and conditioner are wash-off products that are not meant to stay on the skin and hair. ACTIVATE scalp brush makes it easier to wash all soap residue and dirt off the scalp.

5. Use our GLORY conditioner as a lighter, nurturing conditioner treatment. Its nourishing, stimulating ingredients are the perfect remedy for a dry scalp and dull hair. Massage GLORY into the scalp with massaging movements or with ACTIVATE scalp brush in wet hair and after washing with shampoo.

1-2 times a week, we recommend using an extra nurturing hair mask. Leave HALO hair mask in your hair for 5-15 minutes while you do something else - for example exfoliating the skin or shaving your legs (HALO is also a really great alternative to shaving cream and shaving foam by the way!). HALO leaves the hair strands sealed, nourished and protected - making the need for additional conditioner care obsolete, after rinsing with water.

Pro tip: Comb or brush your hair when you apply hair mask or conditioner to minimise wear and tear - especially if you have curly hair, which is more prone to breakage than straight hair.

6. Finish your hair wash with a cold rinse. Cold water closes the hair, seals in the hair care and helps keep your hair soft and shiny.

7. Looking for hair tips that really make a difference? Start with your scalp. A crucial hair tip is to maintain the pH balance of your scalp. When your scalp's pH is out of balance, it can lead to a wide range of problems - dryness, irritation, oily scalp or any of the other periodic issues we can have in this area as your scalp tries to compensate for the pH. Disturbing this delicate balance can also make your scalp more vulnerable to infections and can inhibit hair growth. Apply HERO pH solution to the scalp of towel-dried hair after washing to balance the scalp’s pH, natural protective barrier and sebum production.

8. After you've just washed your hair, it's not good to leave it in a towel turban. This is OK for a few minutes after gently squeezing excess water out of the hair after a shower and putting it up briefly in a turban – just long enough to prevent excess water from dripping down your back. The hair and scalp should then be allowed to air dry. Don’t towel dry your hair. Take care of the fragile strands of hair – wet hair is extra vulnerable and breaks easily. Squeeze excess water out of the hair but don’t rub the hair with the towel.

9. Wet or damp hair should not be left in a bun or ponytail for hours. This can cause a fungal infection on the scalp. The hair should be allowed to dry straight after washing, not hours later when the bun or ponytail is taken out.

10. Brush your hair from the bottom up. DEVOTE hair brush is gentle on the scalp and hair shaft. The round wooden tips glide effortlessly through the hair, untangling it gently with a minimum risk of hair breakage. Start by brushing the tips, move slowly upwards through the hair, rather than starting at the roots and pulling the tousled hair down through the rest of the hair.

11. Brush your hair regularly and take your time. It’s good for the scalp to be massaged and stimulated by soft brushes. It’s like a “dry brushing” of the body. It removes dead skin, stimulates blood circulation of the scalp. Your regular hairbrush is perfect for this purpose, but if you want to give your scalp even better conditions, we recommend ACTIVATE scalp brush. The most delightful and effective way to stimulate the skin on the scalp. Gentle pressure point and massage of the scalp increases blood circulation, which is an important element in promoting hair growth and preventing hair loss. Regular exfoliating massage of the scalp also helps reduce dandruff and dryness naturally.

12. Do you find that your hair tends to get greasy? Often, greasy hair is simply your scalp's natural oils doing their job a little too well. This can be due to a variety of reasons, from washing too often (which can strip your scalp of oils and cause it to overcompensate) to using products that may be too heavy for your hair type.

Holidays can be a good time to give your hair a detox from over-washing. It may be easier to have greasy hair when you’re on holiday. If you’re weaning yourself off the silicone found in conventional shampoos and conditioners, it will also take time for the hair and scalp to rediscover their natural balance, and the hair may be greasy at first.

13. Give your scalp a regular oil treatment. Even though it takes two washes to get the oil out of my hair, I find that my hair is saturated by the nutritious oils, and that it makes it look thicker. Try HOPE, MILD or WILD body oil depending on your mood. If the scalp feels irritated, try the MILD body oil. A good tip to rinse the oil more easily out of the hair is to massage the shampoo into the hair before making it wet in the shower.

14. Use elastic bands that are not joined by a metal clip. Use welded ones instead as the pieces of metal can break the hair.

Another hair tip is: don’t sleep with your hair in a bun or ponytail as it’s damaging for the hair.

15. Give yourself a scalp massage while watching your favourite series. This can easily be done without any product on your fingers, e.g. with ACTIVATE scalp brush, but it’s extra beneficial with a good oil.

16. Cutting the ends is one of the most important hair tips. Cutting off the split ends can prevent further breakage. Things like colouring or straightening can weaken and dry out your hair if not done properly or done too often.

17. Another tip for maintaining healthy hair is to only use hair care products and styling that are not only good for your hair, but also for your skin. Everything you get in your hair to add moisture, shine, protection and nourishment will often also come in contact with the skin. And it is not always beneficial for the skin, as many styling products have a clogging effect and can cause impurities and scalp problems.

AMAZE hair hydrator is specifically designed to provide the best for hair lengths, but with the scalp and skin in mind. It is so clean in the formulation that you can use the excess product on e.g. your hands and forearms as luxurious, nourishing skin care.

REBEL hair texturiser is a styling spray for hair with natural ingredients. REBEL is formulated with sugar molecules instead of salt water, to create that effortless beach and bed hair-look, without compromising the health of your hair and scalp, like a conventional sea salt spray.

On busy days, use PUFF dry shampoo, a natural and fragrance-free dry shampoo that remedies greasy hair.

18. A tip for healthy hair to keep in mind: be gentle with your locks. Try to limit the use of high heat if you use a blow dryer, straightener or similar. Heat damages your hair. If you use heat on your hair, always use a heat-protectant styling product. Heat protection is just one of the many features of our AMAZE hair hydrator. Read more about the product here.

19. CALM balm can be used on the tips as a softening styling product for both long and short hairstyles. Use it in dry hair as a styling product or in towel-dry hair to care, gather and soften.

EPIC hair oil is a natural, silicone-free hair oil with nourishing oils for the hair which soften, protects and adds glossy shine to the hair without weighing it down.

20. Drink water. Hair, old and new, needs hydration to grow long and healthy. Like the skin, your hair is last in line to benefit from the water we drink. A hydrated body will also result in stronger, healthier hair. One of our most important taglines is STAY HYDRATED both inside and out. AMAZE hair hydrator adds hydrating ingredients to the hair - like a large strengthening glass of water - just for the hair.

Another important hair tip is to consider your diet. What you eat has a big impact on hair health. Make sure you're getting plenty of vitamins and minerals. Foods rich in protein, omega-3 and biotin can contribute to stronger, healthier hair. Remember, your hair health is an extension of your overall wellbeing, so take care of yourself, from the inside and out.
