20 tips on caring for your hair and scalp
Ten years in the hairdressing chair as a model and regular visits to my hairdresser in Copenhagen over the years have taught me that there’s nothing straightforward about hair care. I’ve been given some really good advice over the years, and I want to share it with you – and there’s a fair bit of it, so bear with me!
1 / When washing your hair, the scalp is actually the most important part of your head to wash. In fact, we should rename hair washing as scalp washing. Make sure your scalp is the focus of your hair washing. Massage it and ideally give it a gentle scratch with your nails or with our scalp brush. The scalp is where dead skin cells, the skin’s natural oils, styling products, pollutants and dirt accumulate. This is not good for the small hair follicles, which should ideally have a healthy environment with plenty of room to grow new hair. Clogged hair follicles will result in thinner, more fragile hairs, ingrown hairs and small, red bumps on the scalp.
ACTIVATE scalp brush is an extra “helping hand” when you stand there under the shower. It effectively removes build-up around the hair follicles, clearing the path for undisturbed, oxygenated hair follicles and strengthened hair strands, while the massaging movements relieve muscle tension and headaches.
2 / Don’t wash your hair too often. The more frequently you wash your hair, the more oil the scalp will produce in an attempt to make up for the drying effect caused by shampoo and hair washing. This can become a vicious cycle and give you an oily scalp.
3 / Wash your hair in lukewarm water. Water of around 40 degrees is said to be the ideal temperature to wash your hair. Don’t scald your hair and scalp with water that is too hot as it seriously dries out your hair, making it brittle and dull.
4 / Be sure to rinse your hair – and especially your scalp – thoroughly after each wash. Rinse in sections to ensure that all the hair product is out. Shampoo and conditioner are wash-off products that are not meant to stay on the skin and hair. ACTIVATE scalp brush makes it easier to wash all soap residue and dirt off the scalp.
5 / Use our GLORY conditioner 02 as a hair and scalp mask. Its nourishing, stimulating ingredients are the perfect remedy for a dry scalp and dull hair. Massage GLORY into the scalp with massaging movements or with ACTIVATE scalp brush in wet hair and after washing with shampoo. Leave it on for around 10 minutes while you do something else – exfoliating the skin or shaving your legs for example (GLORY is also a really great alternative to shaving cream and shaving foam by the way!).
6 / Finish your hair wash with a cold rinse. Cold water closes the hair, seals in the hair care and helps keep your hair soft and shiny.
7 / Apply HERO pH solution 02 to the scalp of towel-dried hair after washing to balance the scalp’s pH, natural protective barrier and sebum production. HERO helps alleviate dryness, irritation, a greasy scalp or other problems we may occasionally experience in this area.
8 / When you have just washed your hair, it’s not good for it to leave it in a towel turban. This is OK for a few minutes after gently squeezing excess water out of the hair after a shower and putting it up briefly in a turban – just long enough to prevent excess water from dripping down your back. The hair and scalp should then be allowed to air dry. Don’t towel dry your hair. Take care of the fragile strands of hair – wet hair is extra vulnerable and breaks easily. Squeeze excess water out of the hair but don’t rub the hair with the towel. Do not rub the hair with the towel. Beware of brittle hairs - wet hair is extra vulnerable and breaks easily. Squeeze excess water out of the hair, but do not rub on the hair with the towel.
9 / Wet or damp hair should not be left in a bun or ponytail for hours. This can cause a fungal infection on the scalp. The hair should be allowed to dry straight after washing, not hours later when the bun or ponytail is taken out.
10 / Brush your hair from the bottom up. Start by brushing the tips, move slowly upwards through the hair, rather than starting at the roots and pulling the tousled hair down through the rest of the hair.
11 / Brush your hair regularly and take your time. It’s good for the scalp to be massaged and stimulated by soft brushes. It’s like a “dry brushing” of the body. It removes dead skin, stimulates blood circulation of the scalp and can be compared to how important it is to comb/brush a baby’s scalp even if they don’t have much hair as it’s the perfect remedy for cradle cap. Scalp brushing is suitable for both adults and children and all types of hair. Gentle pressure point and massage of the scalp increases blood circulation, which is an important element in promoting hair growth and preventing hair loss. Regular exfoliating massage of the scalp also helps reduce dandruff and dryness naturally.
12 / Holidays can be a good time to give your hair a detox from over-washing. It may be easier to have greasy hair when you’re on holiday. If you’re weaning yourself off the silicone found in conventional shampoos and conditioners, it will also take time for the hair and scalp to rediscover their natural balance, and the hair may be greasy at first.
13 / Give your scalp a regular oil treatment. Even though it takes two washes to get the oil out of my hair, I find that my hair is saturated by the nutritious oils, and that it makes it look thicker. I use HOPE, MILD or WILD body oil depending on my mood. If my scalp feels irritated, I apply MILD body oil. A good tip to rinse the oil more easily out of the hair is to massage the shampoo into the hair before making it wet under the shower.
14 / Use elastic bands that are not joined by a metal clip. Use welded ones instead as the pieces of metal can break the hair.
15 / Give yourself a scalp massage while watching your favourite series. This can easily be done without any product on your fingers, e.g. with ACTIVATE scalp brush, but it’s extra beneficial with a good oil.
16 / Don’t sleep with your hair in a bun or ponytail as it’s damaging for the hair.
17 / Use only hair care and styling products that are not only good for the hair but also for the skin. Everything you get in your hair to add moisture, shine, protection and nourishment will often also come in contact with the skin. And it is not always beneficial for the skin, as many styling products have a clogging effect and can cause impurities and scalp problems. 18 / Don’t use a blow dryer, straightener or the like on the hottest setting. Heat damages your hair. If you use heat on your hair, always use a heat-protectant styling product.

Just some of the many useful tips that I have kept in mind over the years and which I try to remember when looking after my own and my children’s hair. Hair is extremely sensitive to how we treat it, and beautiful locks are best achieved by protecting, stimulating and gently cleaning the hair.
