Waarom is de pH-waarde van de huid belangrijk?

Wat is pH?

pH is een getal dat wordt gebruikt om de zuurgraad van een waterige oplossing, huidverzorgingsproducten en het huidoppervlak te meten. De pH-schaal geeft aan hoe zuur of basisch een stof is, en de schaal loopt van 0 tot 14; een pH van 7 is neutraal, een pH lager dan 7 is zuur en een pH hoger dan 7 is basisch. Een evenwichtige huid gedijt bij een pH-waarde van ongeveer 5, wat betekent dat de pH-waarde van de huid licht zuur is. Omgekeerd gedijt het lichaam van binnen bij een neutrale pH-waarde van 7.

Waarom is de pH-waarde van de huid zo belangrijk?

De huid verdient de beste omstandigheden en het belangrijkste uitgangspunt voor een gezonde huid is een gestabiliseerde pH-waarde. De pH-waarde van de huid speelt een cruciale rol in de conditie en het uiterlijk van de huid. Veranderingen in de pH-waarde beïnvloeden de enzymactiviteit en verstoren de natuurlijke celvernieuwingsprocessen die essentieel zijn voor de gezondheid van de huid.

De huid heeft een delicate beschermlaag aan het oppervlak: de zuurmantel, die bestaat uit talg en zweet uit de vele microscopisch kleine poriën in de huid. De belangrijkste taak van de zuurmantel is het beschermen van de huid door een optimale balans te handhaven tussen vocht, natuurlijke beschermende oliën en de vitale bacteriële flora van de huid. Tegelijkertijd moet deze de huid beschermen tegen schadelijke exogene bacteriën, schimmelinfecties, UV-straling en vervuiling. De zuurmantel fungeert als een essentiële beschermende barrière en “een ridder op het witte paard” voor het immuunsysteem van de huid.
